Returning the Eternal Flame

Well, after wandering around with these people for a few days after the debacle with the gnolls, we have finally decided to just carefully insert our presence into the graveyard in hopes of finding this crypt and book for the Raven Queen folks.

Our first steps into the graveyard were met with immediate response from the forces guarding this formerly hollow ground. After learning that most of what is at least patrolling the ground is weak against the cleansing fire of star light, and a few skirmishes we decided to regroup and rethink our approach to the situation. Interestingly enough one of the humanoid undead seemed to respond to us, “Free me.” was all it said. It also seems as though we aren’t the first travelers through this area. We found a Pact Dagger within one of the corpse’s head. Evidently scaling the 70’ wall is the best way to leave a graveyard… these people are going to get me killed or worse.

After much discussion we decided that instead of taking a indirect root and trying to get the lay of the land we would just carefully press forward on path through the center of the graveyard. Amazingly we didn’t come across any patrols that had hampered our previous attempt. Maybe we were more careful or maybe we were just more lucky this time. There seems to be 3 mausoleums; two in serious disrepair. The party consensus is to look inside the one that is still in decent shape. As we approached the doors one of the guard patrols stumbled upon us. I was already on my way to check out the rear of the building when they stumbled upon the rest of the group. They seemed to do fine without me however as upon my return they were all still awake at least.

The beat-stick lizard-kin decided that instead of trying the handle his hammer would work better… he was wrong as it rebounded from the door with no noticeable effects. We opened the doors and I urged everyone to move inside to avoid another patrol and closed the doors after us. The room had 2 sarcophagi, some prayer benches and a couple of nude statues with ornaments. The crunchy dwarf read the inscriptions of the sarcophagi aloud and the forest fellow decided it was a great idea to open the one with the word “hunter” in the description. The sarcophagus was of course, trapped and lit everyone on fire. After that fun, he decided it was an awesome idea to take what was inside, much to the protest of Crunchy and the Livestock.

Amazingly the usually subdued Livestock decided to grab him and pick him up to stop him from robbing the grave. Hell, if it’s not us it’s going to be someone after we finish this thing. Fight in-sues, with beat-stick missing Livestock horribly, me trying to separate everyone with some tough love and finally Crunchy defusing Beat-stick with some words. Must have been too much for him to handle. After some discussion Wonder-Woman decided to close the sarcophagus and it was decided that if the item inside was unprotected we’d take it with us to the remnants of the family.

After the wondrous fight… Crunchy and the Livestock decided to take the ornamental sword and shield from the male and female statuses respectively. While everyone else was up at the other end of this building the forest fellow decided to check the trap on the sarcophagus again. It went off a second time. Wow.

Paperweights in hand, we decided to leave and look at the other two buildings. Upon leaving the first one we were met with a maw and a few zombies. Same kind of zombies that had spoken to us earlier. This time felt different than the last though. The maw caused more to rise from the ground and we made quick work of him and his new additions. Strangely, the weaker ones seemed to be focused on the ornamental sword. Beat-stick shoved the last new addition’s head through his pelvis with great downward vertical force as it said something about being released. Not sure, but didn’t think the weaker undead usually talked. None of the 4 original zombies did anything hostile and it was decided we would see what happened with them following us. We checked out the other two buildings.

The second building was setup much as the first but had the section with the statues completely destroyed and the sarcophagi seemed to have been opened from the inside. Where the building was destroyed was a fissure, rather deep fissure. The undead that were accompanying us seemed to respond to the sarcophagi in this building. We followed the edge of the fissure and it lead to the last of the mausoleums. This one the fissure basically destroyed, the fissure raised the ground as if something had come out of it and upon a closer look we found a stairway down. Crunchy passed off the sword to Wonder-Woman and our new friends that were previously focused on the sarcophagi in this building seemed perplexed by this action and started to stare at her.

After very little discussion we decided to partake in a little spelunking. At the bottom of the roughly cut stairs a room opened up with some kind of sentient ooze. After a long hard fight of Crunchy playing the part of a weeble-wobble, and finding out that the green oozes liked to eat people and didn’t like fire or searing lights, everyone exhausted we decided to look around and found some money and items that seemed like they would be useful. After discussing, yet again, whether to rest or press on, this shouldn’t have been a hard decision, we decided to press on, wrong decision as we were jumped immediately upon opening the door at the end of this room…

Daen Stonehammer - A new life - Day 4

We have spent two days traveling with Jara, she’s a good enough woman but does not give her savior Tongar due credit for his deeds. It saddens me to see such courage thrown on the wayside. The valley has been peaceful and forgiving as we pass almost as if the gods themselves are protecting our voyage. We were informed by Mel that he had seen an organized party of gnolls moving up to the pyre and they were chanting to some savage god. It makes sense that religious fervor would cause them to organize, I wonder if I’ll have a chance to greet this savage being with my axe.
We reached the city of Fallcrest, and it’s quite large in population but not in grandeur apparently there’s a bit of silent war going on between the church of Pelor and the Raven Queen’s disciples. Jara said that their new pastor Conrad, was organizing a Pelor revival and disappeared. She thinks that it was the rival church, but as I am sworn to follow my initial three tasks I will have to come back later to investigate what sort of treachery has befallen the city.
While we were there Jara had our names placed in their resident Book of Heroes, the worse part about these times is that the book was blank until our names were added. I found that these companions however unusual were strangely easy to get along with and good traveling companions. After preparing for the long road ahead stained with gnoll blood we set off out to hunt some more down. About a half a day out into the wild while Aelan and Mel were scouting out ahead, they located a strange ritual site. Under closer observation it was the heart of the gnoll threat. A pair of savage gnoll acolytes were stacking remains of victims on a large alter, I felt Kord’s power course through me as anger and rage for the fallen, and how obscenely their remains were abused.
To my comrades bewilderment I stepped into the sites clearing loudly reciting Kord’s war-song the gnolls seemed completely dumbfounded. Once I had walked, yes walked to closing distance I called on the divine might of my great god and challenged one to face me in the court of combat. It recoiled from the compulsion to fight me and then with the greatest strength and valor I could muster I drew my axe to my bare hand and with a blood oath covered my axe in sacred crimson.
I swung hard and full of purpose striking the enemy true. As I promised you Kord he was staggered as my axe cleaved deep in his core. The fight went rough from there, with vile curse and pained chants of the damned these dark creatures brought us to the brink of death I myself thought that I would be feasting in Kord’s great hall that day. It was Aelan who saved us, the frail young thing risked life and limb in order to see victory. With her strength I count her among your few blessed. Our dark and shady warlock kept on of the vile creatures at bay while Mel’s arrows flew straight and true. Tongar the great man at my back was there with his mysterious rune of healing which only fed the fires of war in my heart.
After what felt like ages the two fell dead at our assault. As they fell the beast they had set the alter for came forth from some foreign nightmare.
Seeing the battle worn fatigue on their faces and feeling the weight of combat bleed the vitality out of me, we withdrew to safer distance. After we had killed the heart of the gnoll threat and with no connection to this demon the gnolls will soon disband and ony be a minor inconvenience at times.
Now as I polish the foul blood out of my armor and axe I look to these few, and think that this road is blessed by the great god Kord and by his hand I will bring a balance back to the field of combat. We make our way back to chayllin’s camp now, once there I plan to double my efforts training and growing stronger.

Daen Stonehammer - A new life - Day Two

On the second day in this strange stone quarters my companions and I watched as the hearth burst forward with violet flame and a large visage of a metal face appeared. He then asked if we were courageous and full of valor, all of us who stood there without hesitation I stepped forward. To my surprise the others did as well, and Tongar stepped up to the hearth and faded from view. I followed suit and found myself outside in a deep forest shortly after, Mel and the other appeared.
There standing before us was a large encampment of sorts. In formation in front of that were a strange race of canine creatures I would later find out were called dog men. Their leader was Chayllin a person of manner not so different than my own. Her mind always seem to revolve around her pack, her family. She instructed us that Brim, the face in the fire wished to see us forged in efforts to prove our worth. This to me was just what i’d been waiting for, a chance to fight courageously to prove my worth to Kord. Once a strange elixir was poured and formal oath given by my peers and myself we got to business.
We were given three tasks to conquer; the first was that a strange new gnoll threat made it difficult for Chayllin’s tribe to move so we were to find them and eliminate the threat. The second was to secure an old tower ruin from kobolds who infested the area. And the third was to clear out an old crypt so that the tribe may set up a base on the outskirts of the town of Fallcrest. Once we had our quests and what information they could tell us about each task we ate and drank before setting off. The rascal’s spirits were stronger than I thought. After some hours of recovery from my ill attempt at trying to out drink some of these dog-men we set off to find some gnolls.
Our first descent into the valley was met with near disaster as an Ettin crashed through the forest and uprooted some trees. Fearing for the lives of my companions so we took to the tree line and he passed by not noticing us. In that moment I was back to that dark day on the tundra where the snow ran red. We stuck to the tree line from that point on, some hours later we caught sight of a gnoll archer with a pack of hyena’s. I managed to keep the hyena’s attention while Mel and Aelan kept fire on the gnoll, Tongar fought with powers I had not seen the like of before. It was as if he could heal with one hand and harm with the other. Though I did not land a killing blow I swear Kord that I will strike true in the next combat. We dispatched the gnoll quickly, he was carrying a holy symbol of Pelor. It must have belonged to some poor victim so I’ll hold on to it until we find out more. We piled the bodies into a large pyre and had Mel stay behind to see if reinforcements show.
The rest of use tracked the origin of the gnoll and came across the remains of three humans who were ambushed there were tracks of a forth. Tongar found her on the face of a cliff, he risked his life to save her. I was amazed at the courage he displayed, it would seem that this is the right road for me after all. Come to find out the symbol of Pelor belonged to a friend of this girl so I felt it was only right to let her keep it. Jara, the girl we rescued was all to happy when we offered to escort back to Fallcrest. On our way back tot the forest line we picked up Mel and made camp for the eve. There we learned some interesting information about the gnolls. But I’m tired and will have to fill it in at a later date. Kord give me the strength to be valorous to every end.

Daen Stonehammer - A new life - Day One

Today was the first day of my new life, it had been years since I had seen the outside world. Though the great halls of Kord were sanctuary, I had come to miss the open steppe. It was not long on my way to find my place in the world that I came to a strange parchment seemingly floating on a tree.
No doubt it was Kord’s might illuminating my path. As I solved the paper’s riddle, my world shifted and to my surprise I found myself lying on a stone floor. The room was strangely comforting and reminded me of the masonry of home. Surveying the room I found I was not alone. A young human man was skulking in the corner trying hard not to be seen. Unfortunately for him a large armored hound of sorts sat in front of his hiding spot apparently trying to make sense of the man I suppose.
After some small chat I find that the young man’s name is Mell…. Mellal… gah! Just Mel for now I guess. Some time later a sound came from the hearth the where I had come to be in this place ther lay a goliath. I found he called himself Tongar, and was accustomed to the company of dwarves. I find this place to be much less uneasy with him here as company. A few hours later a human woman with a wild ellegance appeared. Her name was Aelandriel. A warlock with a shady appearence showed up as well.
We spent the remainder of the day looking about and feasting trying to gain some sense of eachother’s mettle. This is an unusual happenstance even for a travelling champion of Kord. I have faith that glory will find me on this road so long as my courage holds me true.

9/10 Brim: The Adventuring Has Begun

The call has been answered by 5 Adventurers.  Something in their blood set them apart, allowed them to be found.  I'm glad my expenses were not fruitless.

Chaylin does not seem to think much of them.  Maybe she sees something to worry about that I do not; maybe she is just jealous.  I heard back that she even "forgot" giving them the magical gear I provided.  And the healing power fruit.  But they seem to have made friends with the younger Dogmen.  Daen the Dwarf challenged (was it Grhuuff?  Grahhuff?  I swear sometimes …) one of the rank-and-file to a drinking contest.  The Dogmen were so proud to win, now they like these Adventurers even more.  But this is of course good for us all.

They took on my 3 quests to prove themselves, and I'm relieved to hear they took my oath.  It would have been tragic if they had wanted to drink my expensive (oh, to think of what that cost me!) Elixer of Experience without granting me fidelity.  How would I ever be able to trust them?

Hopefully they will compete these 3 tests quickly, gaining the strength and insight they will need.  Then I can talk with them about why I called for Heroes of Virtue.

While the wiki is great for organizing your campaign world, it’s not the best way to chronicle your adventures. For that purpose, you need a blog!

The Adventure Log will allow you to chronologically order the happenings of your campaign. It serves as the record of what has passed. After each gaming session, come to the Adventure Log and write up what happened. In time, it will grow into a great story!

Best of all, each Adventure Log post is also a wiki page! You can link back and forth with your wiki, characters, and so forth as you wish.

One final tip: Before you jump in and try to write up the entire history for your campaign, take a deep breath. Rather than spending days writing and getting exhausted, I would suggest writing a quick “Story So Far” with only a summary. Then, get back to gaming! Grow your Adventure Log over time, rather than all at once.
